English Language Arts for Grade 5 focuses on five key areas: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Grammar, and Vocabulary.
In Reading, students develop detailed comprehension skills through discussions, illustrations, character studies, and text revisions. They learn to analyze texts by seeking evidence to support their ideas, making inferences, and responding personally to books and passages.
In Writing, students practice both factual and creative expression. They learn to craft opinion pieces on various topics or texts, supporting their viewpoints with reasons and information, while also developing narratives based on real or imagined experiences and events.
Speaking and Listening activities focus on collaborative discussions, whether one-on-one, in groups, or teacher-led. These discussions encourage students to build on others’ ideas and express their own clearly, enhancing their communication skills.
Grammar study is woven into reading and writing activities or addressed through contextualized exercises. The aim is to help students recognize the role of grammar and mechanics in everyday texts and improve their own language use.
Vocabulary expansion is supported through weekly spelling activities and reading tasks. Students refine their word-decoding strategies by using context clues and analyzing roots, prefixes, and suffixes to understand new words. This comprehensive approach helps strengthen their overall language proficiency.
Math for Grade 5 places a strong emphasis on fractions. Students learn to convert improper fractions, work with mixed numbers, and perform the four operations involving fractions. They also develop skills in rounding and estimation while exploring foundational concepts of probability and ratio.
A significant part of the coursework involves solving word problems. Students focus on identifying the necessary information to complete a problem, building critical thinking and problem-solving skills in practical contexts.
Science for 5th Grade integrates an Islamic perspective, encouraging students to view the study of science as a means to understand the world and humanity’s impact on Earth’s resources.
Students engage in the scientific method through a variety of activities, including independent work, pair collaborations, and group projects. These activities involve drawing meaning from informative texts or hands-on experiments, fostering critical thinking and inquiry skills.
Presentations to peers serve as a key component of the curriculum, allowing students to solidify their knowledge through the act of explaining concepts to others. This approach not only reinforces understanding but also builds confidence and communication skills.
