English Language Arts for Grade 4 covers three areas of competency: Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar. In Reading, students work with a range of genres, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, biography, fables, expository text, fiction, and poetry. They develop accuracy and fluency to support comprehension, determine themes, describe characters, settings, or events in depth, and compare and contrast narrative points of view. Students also apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
In Writing, students learn to produce clear and coherent compositions that align with the task, purpose, and audience. The year begins with a personal narrative, followed by a cross-curricular research project tied to social studies. Additional units include poetry, persuasive essays, and biographies. Throughout these projects, students enhance their writing skills by focusing on planning, revising, and editing their work.
Grammar instruction ensures students can effectively use language conventions in writing, speaking, reading, and listening. Emphasis is placed on understanding figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Students also work on determining the meanings of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases, strengthening their vocabulary and overall communication skills.
Math for Grade 4 emphasizes the development of problem-solving and reasoning skills, building on computational abilities to foster deeper mathematical understanding.
The curriculum focuses on three critical areas. First, students learn multi-digit multiplication and division to find quotients with multi-digit dividends. Second, they explore fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.
Lastly, students engage in the analysis and classification of geometric figures, examining properties such as parallel and perpendicular sides, specific angle measures, and symmetry. These skills provide a strong foundation for advanced mathematical concepts.
Science for 4th Grade uses a hands-on discovery approach, emphasizing the implementation of the scientific method. This approach encourages students to think critically and reason scientifically while actively engaging with concepts.
The curriculum covers a variety of topics, including plants and animals in their environment, the properties of magnetism and electricity, and the properties of water.
Students also explore the effects of natural events on Earth, applying their scientific understanding to real-world phenomena. This comprehensive approach fosters curiosity and builds a strong foundation in scientific principles.
